Our Time as Freshmen, we scarcely believe
so sad and dejected, were we . . .
Time was slow and painful.

Suddenly one September in 1956,
fullfledged Sophomore's held sway.

Our timidity gone . . .by bravado
replaced.

Time danced and capered.

Our last truly carefree summer is at an end. Time brings

change new places and new faces. But we will make this a year

to remember.

Page Three

So we look to our School where friends will
be and serious thoughts, too.

So short a time since we entered the first grade in this building. It was built
in 1926 and completed in 1936. Many of our parents attended school here.

The present high school building was completed in 1944. All rooms were not
used by high school classes then but we are quite crowded now.

Page Four

In 1948 this building was erected
for students who were interested
in training in agriculture. The
shop has been used for veterans'
classes, too.

Over-crowding is a problem
in the primary grades, so in
1953 the first grade build-
ing was constructed.

As time goes on, the new gymnasium will be completed, and a more adequate
program in Physical Education will be available. It will be connected to the
present high school building by another much needed science room and classroom.

Abdication

He has been with our school for a long time, but he
is retiring this year. He often went the "second
mile" to help and interest his students. By practic-
ing his firm belief that education and religion are
inseparable, he has influenced the lives of many
students.

Sharing honors with her husband is a teacher whom
we learned to love and respect when we were quite
young. Through her we pay tribute to our different
primary teachers.

It is with pride that we, the class of 1959, dedicate the ninth edition of The Blue
Jay to . . .

MR. and MRS. HARVEY MADISON

Mr. Guy T. Swain, our principal, must
have received some pleasing news like,
"Yes, I am really sick today. I'm not
laying out of school."

Miss Marie Haigwood, our friendly county
supervisor of instruction, is always wel-
comed by teachers and students. Mr. Fred
Hobson, our county superintendent, pro-
motes better schools early and late.

M ,

We are fortunate in having a school board so up-to-date and
vitally interested in our school. Mr. Marshall Adams, Mr. Roy
Boles, and Mr. Bob Snow.

Mrs. Gertrude Salmons, Librarian
and English teacher, is always
working to keep the library in top
shape and teach the hard subject
of English IV.

Miss Peggy Lewis doesn't look this
happy in Journalism and Public
Speaking. She must save it for her
English classes.

Mrs. Stacie Groce, our office secre-
tary, is pleasing to look at as well as
very efficient.

Mrs. Louise Randleman, our Sci-
ence teacher, isn't afraid of the
biggest snake or ugliest spider.

Mr. John Charles, Civics teacher
and football Coach, hustles the stu-
dents in the classroom as well as
the team on the field.

Miss Mary Speer, frequently called
Miss Algebra, is seen here with her
famous "little brown notebook" and,
of course, she is checking on some-
thing for the annual.

Mr. Joe Stroud, our Physics teach-
er, seems to be saying, "Well now,
we have perfect attendance today."

Mrs. Jane Holcomb, our French
teacher, looks much too serious for
her "Romper Room" students . . .
French II, 3rd period.

Mr. John Wesley Mathis, Social Stud-
ies teacher and basketball coach, is
asking how many people are in Sput-
nik II.

Mr. Gerald Boles, our Agriculture
teacher, is always prepared to
teach the boys anything from farm-
ing to the complicated setup of
machinery.

Mrs. Ola Hendren, our Home Eco-
nomics teacher, is always cooking
up something new, be it wearable
or edible.

Mrs. Faye Boles, the Commercial
teacher, has a look of "Class, please
be quiet."

Page Nine

Getting the first graders off to a good start are Mrs.
Lydia Johnson, Mrs. Ruby Canipe, Mrs. Anne Madison
and Mrs. Kate Key.

Under the direction of Mrs. Hazel Nolan and Mrs.
Iris Canipe, the second graders are doing a fine job.

With Mrs. Ruth White, Mrs. Mary Harris, and Mrs.
Catherine Wilkins, the third graders are getting ac-
quainted with their new books.

Mrs. Helene Dudley, Mrs. Edith Bray and Mrs.
Blanche Rash are kept busy every minute of the day
helping the fourth graders.

Mrs. Mary Essie, Miss Lois Parks, and Mrs. Jean On the playground or in the classroom, Mr. Harvey

Mathis, the fifth grade teachers, believe that "All work Madison, Mr. Chy Rash and Mrs. Blanche Phillips are

and no play make Jack a dull boy." always lending a helping hand to the sixth graders.

With Mrs. Mary Lee Kelly, Mrs. Mabel Wagoner and Mr. Clyde Phillips and Mr. Edward West are kept

Mrs. Edna Reece as teachers, there is never a dull busy preparing the eighth graders for high school,

moment in the seventh grade classes.

Days To Remember

September 3, 1958 and we can't believe
we are Seniors, with all the privileges
and honors due us. Jo Ann Chappell is
really taking this serious.

After school sessions on the annual are not
always so enjoyable, but Josephine Spann,
Carolyn Everidge, Jo Ann Smith, Joel
Bryant, and Frances Brown wouldn't miss
them.

Class History

As we, the Seniors of '59, look back on our 4 years in high school, we find
that we have many moments to remember. Our time here can be divided into
four sections.

In the fall of 1955, we entered high school with a group of 64. To our
dismay we were initiated as Dogpatch characters. Any indignities we may have
suffered were soon forgotten when the Senior Class gave us a party that night.
That year the football team, with 6 players from our class, reached the semi-
finals in the State Class A tournament. With our final exams behind us, we gladly
left school for three months of fun.

A class of 46 started the Sophomore year. We greeted Mr. Swain, our
new principal, with an air of anticipation. The basketball team went to the finals
in the State Class A tournament. Our class placed 2 players on the squad. Now
with our finals over, we were ready for 3 months of vacation.

We finally became upperclassmen with a group of 47. So many exciting
things happened during our Junior Year. The Junior play, "Swing Fever," was a
big success. Also there was much excitement planning for the Junior-Senior Prom
and Banquet. The theme of the prom was "Teahouse of the August Moon."
Finally our class rings arrived in April. Never was there a more excited group
than we, showing our rings to everyone. Now with final exams over, we welcomed
3 months of freedom.

In the fall of 1958, we began our Senior year with a group of 44. We are
looking forward to the Senior Play, the trip to Washington, D. C, and the
Junior-Senior Prom and Banquet. We initiated the Freshmen as Disneyland
characters and gave them a party that night. Soon we will receive our diplomas
and walk out into the world. Although we may do many things and visit many
places, we shall always remember our days in high school.

The Jonesville 4-H is an active organization in our school, helping boys and
girls to become wide-awake leaders in their communities.

Each year one of the most impor-
tant jobs is planning the layout for
the yearbook.

The staff is composed of Seniors
and a few of the interested Juniors.

The Annual is financed by circu-
lation and securing advertisements
from the local businessmen.

Though we have fun working to-
gether, it is not play to write copy,
plan pictures, and the many things
that go into making our Blue Jay a
treasured yearbook.

Times and Places we will miss

With so much emphasis on Sci-
ence today, already we know we
should have used our time here
better. And this means our other
classes, too.

Time spent in the library is not
lost— for books are friends that
are always sincere.

This exemplifies so much more
than typing— the help it gave us
for extracurricular activities—
the comradeship of working to-
gether.

Then the wonderful, irrespon-
sible feeling of "school let out"—
3:15— the time of no return— We
will miss you!
